We couldn’t imagine many things without the element of production and manufacturing: this is the crucial part of any existing supply chain. What’s interesting, the IT sector plays a massive role there nowadays too. Axioma Metering, the developer and manufacturer of ultrasonic heat, water metering, and data management devices, is an excellent example of such an integration. While working with multiple global markets, advanced technological development is definitely one of the success factors for this Lithuanian company. What’s more, their IT department told us a lot of interesting details about their everyday work!

Darius Rekašius, Head of IS Development, and Edgaras Rusteika, Software Developer, have been at Axioma Metering for a few years. Both holding degrees in IT, they have a wide range of responsibilities in the office: for instance, Darius not only ensures that all users of related IT systems are happy but also works as a mediator between team members and developers. “My goal is to help them in communication,” he says. Additionally, Darius has been always interested in making processes more efficient and better optimized – this passion led him right to the current leadership role.

Meanwhile, Edgaras, a member of the Darius’ team, started his career in a slightly different section: he was developing mobile applications and product software for quite a while before joining Axioma Group. Today, he’s responsible for maintaining and upgrading systems as well as working with robotics to some extent. “If asked to describe my job title accurately, I’d say I’m a developer and a technical consultant at the same time.”

All in all, the IT department at Axioma Metering is really busy. While programmers develop systems and ensure their smooth operation, the IT administrator is responsible for the maintenance of the IT infrastructure, monitoring of the systems, and their uninterrupted operation. This helps both the company’s customers and employees to make work more convenient, faster, and, most importantly, higher quality. Additionally, their System Administrator is the guru of network and servers while the Analyst gathers all information necessary for communication.

What are the main stereotypes about the jobs in the IT sector you tend to hear quite often?

Darius: Probably the main stereotype about IT employees is that they do not come out into the light of day and do not communicate with others – but that is not true!

Edgaras: That the programmer needs to know why the printer is not working or why there is no Internet. The IT sector covers so many areas, so sometimes there’s no need to get angry at us if we don’t know how to solve things which are basic from the first sight.

And what do you actually do at work? 

Darius: The main part is working with a team: planning, distributing tasks, discussing them. During my workday, I lead my team responsible for the maintenance and operation of the IT infrastructure and systems. This includes the development and maintenance of the purchasing and production information system too. As the company keeps growing, internal meetings take a lot of time as we need to find new solutions on how to improve and automate production processes.

Edgaras: In short, I convert coffee into code. And more broadly, I develop new systems and maintain existing ones. Another part of the job is not related to my direct duties, I help production employees to solve IT-related problems. In other words, I help put out internal “fires”.

Also, Darius and Edgaras shared a few interesting rules of thumb they made in their team!

• If you want to work during the weekend, do your release on Friday.
• Developers don’t code in light as the light attracts bugs.
• Developers convert coffee and cola to codes.
• Not all bugs are bugs, some of them are features.
• Developers don’t know why their colleague’s computer doesn’t turn on!

What in your work excites you the most?

Darius: What fascinates me most is that I can directly work with many processes that take place in the company. These can be anything from orders or finance to production or warehouse management.

Edgaras: I have a lot of freedom to create and look for the best solution as well as I can see the long-term results of my work. And of course, we don’t just code website solutions – there’s much more than it.

If you had to sell the career in IT (particularly in Axioma Metering) to someone, what would be your statement?

Darius: Touch what you program. In our company, programmers often have to go into production and see how the changes they make affect the production processes.
